Insurance-Requested Sewer Camera Inspections in NYC

Has your insurance company, broker, or underwriter requested a sewer-line inspection? NY Sewer Cam provides recorded sewer-camera inspections, photographs, video documentation, and a written condition report for residential and commercial properties throughout New York City and Nassau County.

Recorded video • Written PDF report • Inspection photos • Up to 230 feet inspected

Why Would an Insurance Company Request a Sewer Inspection?

A sewer-camera inspection is not automatically required for every homeowners insurance policy. Some carriers and underwriters may request additional documentation before issuing coverage, approving certain endorsements, or finalizing coverage for a particular property.

A request may be more common when a property is older, the sewer-line material is unknown, previous water or sewer claims exist, or the insurer wants to evaluate the visible condition of the private sewer lateral before accepting the risk.

NY Sewer Cam provides independent visual documentation of the accessible sewer line. Our role is to record and report the visible condition of the line. The insurance company or underwriter determines whether the documentation satisfies its requirements.

Underwriting review

Common Reasons an Inspection May Be Requested

Older Property

Older buildings may contain clay, cast iron, Orangeburg, or other aging sewer-line materials.

Unknown Pipe Material

The insurance company may want documentation of the apparent pipe material and visible condition.

Prior Sewer or Water Claim

A previous backup, collapse, blockage, or water-damage claim may trigger additional underwriting questions.

Service-Line Coverage

The insurer may request documentation before approving or adding certain service-line-related coverage.

High-Value Property

Brownstones, townhouses, mixed-use buildings, and other high-value properties may receive additional underwriting review.

Visible Plumbing Concerns

Slow drains, recurring backups, root intrusion, or signs of deterioration may result in a request for further inspection.

The exact requirements vary by insurance company, policy, property, and underwriter.

Manhattan

Insurance Sewer Inspections for Manhattan Properties

Manhattan townhouses, brownstones, mixed-use buildings, and older residential properties may have sewer laterals with limited records, aging materials, multiple plumbing alterations, or access challenges.

When an insurance company requests a sewer scope, timing may matter because the inspection can be connected to a closing date or policy-binding deadline. NY Sewer Cam offers dedicated Manhattan appointments and provides digital documentation that can be shared quickly with the insurance broker or underwriter.

The standard service covers the private sewer lateral from an accessible trap or cleanout toward the public sewer connection. Interior building drains and stack inspections are a separate service.

Before Booking, Ask Your Insurance Professional

  • Does the insurer need only the inspection video, or also a written report?
  • Must the public sewer connection be reached?
  • Is a specific pipe section or access point required?
  • Is there a policy-binding or closing deadline?
  • Does the underwriter require photographs?
  • Is the request related to the full policy, service-line coverage, or a prior claim?
  • Where should the completed documentation be sent?

If the insurance request is unclear, send it to NY Sewer Cam before the appointment so we can review the requested documentation.
